Developing IEP Goals for Students with Hearing Loss: Speech, Language and Auditory Development

Audience: Teachers of the deaf, special education classroom teachers, itinerants, pediatric speech-language pathologists

Are you a teacher of the deaf or speech-language pathologist who writes IEP goals for students with hearing loss? Are you assessing the appropriate areas to determine specific needs? This half-hour, interactive course, “Developing IEP Goals for Students with Hearing Loss: Speech, Language and Auditory Development” takes you through the process of writing IEP goals using SMART criteria for children with hearing loss. (SMART goals are Specific, Measurable, Action-oriented, Relevant, Realistic and Time-bound). The course explores example goals and benchmarks for children of various ages from 3 to 12 years. It ends with a case study challenging you to apply what you just learned.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will be able to:

  • Describe an effective process for developing IEP goals for students with hearing loss.
  • Identify the elements of a SMART goal that meet IEP requirements.
  • Identify the categories of goals recommended for students with hearing loss.
  • Select appropriate IEP goals for a case study.
