Auditory Training Overview with Speech Detection: Using SPICE

Audience: Teachers of the deaf, special education classroom teachers, itinerants, pediatric speech-language pathologists

Whether they use hearing aid(s), cochlear implant(s) or both, most children who are deaf or hard of hearing need systematic training to make the most of the technology. Auditory Training Overview with Speech Detection: Using SPICE is the first in a series of four self-paced courses created to save teachers and SLPs time in helping children ages 2-12 develop fundamental auditory skills.  This course is an overview of the CID Speech Perception Instructional Curriculum and Evaluation, or SPICE.

The SPICE curriculum is based on research and informed by 20 years of classroom teaching at CID. SPICE offers a practical, structured approach for developing skills in speech detection, suprasegmental perception, vowel and consonant perception and connected speech. It provides a framework for documenting student progress and communicating with parents and other professionals.

This course covers auditory training procedures using SPICE as well as how to achieve the first goal in its application: speech detection. Even if you don’t have the SPICE materials, you can apply the concepts and principles covered.

After learning what you need to understand about auditory perceptual development, you will learn how to use specific components of the SPICE kit to assess your student’s present auditory skills, to determine appropriate skills to target, to set and track IEP goals and to plan and conduct auditory lessons to meet individual needs.

The course includes classroom video so you can see effective teaching practices in action.
