Real World Auditory Learning for Children Who Are Deaf and Hard of Hearing: Using the CID SPICE for Life 2 Curriculum

Course Description: This intermediate level workshop is designed to teach speech-language pathologists and teachers of the deaf techniques to help children with hearing loss listen in everyday situations. Participants learn an overview of skills including: improving auditory memory and comprehension, listening with technology, conversing, listening in noise, localizing sounds and more from the CID SPICE for Life 2.

Learning Objectives:

  • Provide examples of auditory tasks and listening environments that can be challenging for children who are deaf/hard of hearing.
  • Explain best practices for working with students who use hearing aids and/or cochlear implants for a variety of listening purposes.
  • Describe successful methods of selecting goals to improve listening, language, speech and overall social communication.
  • Identify appropriate teaching practices to help develop auditory learning in structured lessons for students ages 5- 12.
  • Describe ways to integrate the development of auditory skills during regular classroom activities.
  • Provide examples of strategies to incorporate parent involvement in developing better listening skills for their children in a variety of settings.
  • Identify different methods of data collection.
  • Analyze student errors and utilize strategies based on the analysis to develop auditory skills.

    • Certificates of completion
    • Recorded access to the workshop for two weeks
