Linking Language & Literacy: Developing Reading & Writing Skills in Children Deaf or Hard of Hearing

Audience: Teachers of the deaf, special education classroom teachers, itinerants, pediatric speech-language pathologists

Language is the foundation for developing literacy skills. This is why children with hearing loss, who typically have had limited exposure to language, often experience challenges when learning to read and write.

This course, “Linking Language and Literacy: Strategies for Developing Reading and Writing Skills in Children Who Are Deaf and Hard of Hearing,” is designed for speech-language pathologists. In it, we give you ways to make your sessions more effective by reinforcing and supporting student carryover of skills learned in the classroom.

Your engagement with any given child is limited. This course gives you ways to leverage your sessions to facilitate the development of language skills that are fundamental to a lifetime of literacy and learning.


  • Code-based and meaning-based foundational skills
  • Factors that predict reading success
  • Practical auditory training suggestions to improve phonological awareness and speech comprehension
  • Strategies for incorporating vocabulary, figurative language, words with multiple meanings to improve reading skills
  • Writing and comprehension as language-based skills
  • Recommended practices to successfully support a child’s development of literacy skills

Learning Outcomes

Our goal is to enable you to effectively expand your focus to help children improve literacy skills during your sessions. Participants will be able to:

  • Describe the effects of hearing loss on the development of literacy skills
  • Identify how phonological awareness supports literacy
  • Use specific strategies to effectively incorporate literacy skills into therapy sessions
