Course Description
This introductory level course is intended for speech-language pathologists and teachers of the deaf working with students with hearing loss who are developing listening and spoken language. This course provides video excerpts and discussion of vocabulary, language, and speech lessons with students at varying ages and at varying levels in their listening and spoken language development. Participants will learn characteristics of different types of learners; audiological factors that influence vocabulary, language, and speech; assessment methods; and treatment strategies to develop the vocabulary, language, and speech skills of children who are deaf and hard of hearing.
Learning Outcomes
Participants will be able to:

- Explain the impact of audiological factors on vocabulary, language, and speech.
- Describe characteristics of the different types of learners.
- Identify informal assessment methods for evaluating vocabulary, language, and speech skills.
- Analyze student errors to develop appropriate IEP goals.
- Differentiate activities for vocabulary, language, and speech instruction to students of varying levels.
- Identify methods of prompting newly learned vocabulary, spoken language, and speech corrections to students of varying levels.
