Course Description: This intermediate level course for speech-language pathologists working with children who are deaf and hard of hearing provides a useful overview of audiology and current hearing technology as a foundation for understanding the speech and language characteristics of children who are deaf and hard of hearing. It outlines unique components of intervention for speech, language, reading and writing and empowers participants to successfully serve as IEP case managers for children ages 3 to 12+ years. The workshop includes lectures, videos, and interactive activities.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe varying degrees of hearing loss and associated hearing technology
  • Describe the effects of hearing loss on the development of speech and language skills
  • Identify unique characteristics of intervention targeting speech, language, reading and writing with children who are deaf or hard of hearing
  • Identify specific accommodations, modifications and strategies to implement when supporting children who are deaf or hard of hearing in the classroom
  • Demonstrate ability to carry out responsibilities of an IEP case manager for children who are deaf or hard of hearing
  • Determine information and education needed for peers, staff and service providers working or interacting with children who are deaf or hard of hearing
